Federated Group Packages Up Efficiency

Federated Group provides sales and marketing services in the food service, drug, grocery and convenience store industries, including visual branding and package design for a number of private label brands you see on shelves at supermarkets and drugstores across the country.

For Federated Group, Workgroups DaVinci represents the most efficient way to manage their packaging design projects end-to-end. “We use Workgroups to manage the entire packaging design project, from creative through production, including coordination with the printers who will actually produce the packaging,” said Marty DiFrisco, then Director at Federated Group.

Employing Workgroups’ project management functionality, account managers initially open a new job number and create a customized packaging checklist form that provides all necessary information for designers to do their jobs. Designers and production staff begin work based on the information contained in the checklist and also implement time tracking for each project in which they participate. DiFrisco found Workgroups to be an important tool for managing human resources and productivity, allowing him to quickly spot when output is lacking or there is a potential bottleneck on a particular project.

  • “By using Workgroups to keep up with daily performance, our billing is much more accurate, and that is important for our overall profitability.”

“We expect 80% to 90% efficiency from our staff. I can easily see and evaluate each staff member’s activities on a daily basis, including what they were doing in terms of design, production, mock-ups, printing and more. If individuals are not performing at the optimum level, those performance issues can be addressed before they become a bigger problem.”

Workgroups also made it easier to DiFrisco and his team to keep track of their bottom line with increased accuracy, ensuring that nothing gets missed when it comes time to bill for their services. “If it is not in the system, we can’t bill for it. By using Workgroups to keep up with daily performance, our billing is much more accurate, and that is important for our overall profitability.”

DiFrisco credited Workgroups with supporting his team’s ability to produce high-volume work with less overhead by introducing time-saving measures such as providing clients with the ability to check their project statuses without having to call or send an email. With a team of seven staff and limited freelance support, they’re able to produce packaging for 1000 products annually. “Workgroups is a major contributor to our ability to work that lean,” he said.
